Yesterday we discussed with a tennis coach results of last weeks – 2013 WTA Championship in Istanbul with Serena Williams’ triumph and ATP tournament at Basel Open, where Federer lost to Juan Martin del Potro in the final.
It was no candidate for the 2013 WTA champion but Serena Williams. But she brought big surprises in the semifinals and the final. Why Serena played ups and downs in the two last matches? It looked like Jelena Jankovic and Na Li had chances for winning?
Serena Williams wasn’t at her best, but she is so dominant that she doesn’t have to be. The rules of probability state that everybody will play around a mean. Serena’s average is incredibly high, but even she has to have better and worse days.
Roger Federer split with Paul Annacone after 3.5 years of working together. Do you think that Federer still has a potential to return to top three of higher? Can any new coach help to Roger to do that?
Annacone should have brought more offense to Federer’s game, but really didn’t. If you’re as successful as Roger Federer, it’s hard to change your tactics. Only Rafael Nadal, as far as I can remember, made a major addition to his game after reaching the top. I’d never count Roger Federer out, but now there are several players besides Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray who can beat him. Probability is not on his side.
Question for the readers. If you were chosen as a new Federer’s tennis coach, what would you change in his game?
