The First Big Surprises at Wimbledon 2013

The first day in London was very interesting for watching. We saw some very surprising results on the tennis courts at Wimbledon.

Rafael Nadal, who recently celebrated a victory at Roland Garros,  shocked at Wimbledon by world number 135 Steve Darcis. 29 years old Belgian  becomes the first player to beat Rafael Nadal in the first round of a major at Wimbledon Monday.

I asked a tennis coach about his opinion regarding this very unpredictable result. He said:

“The commentators were mentioning Nadal’s left knee, but nobody is 100% all the time in elite sports. Steve Darcis went for broke on his forehand and put it in. He got a huge percentage of service returns in play. And Rafael Nadal’s forehand wasn’t catching the spin he expected. He was a little bit off, and Steve Darcis played the match of his life. Roger Federer’s chances of winning just shot up.”

On the women’s side a rising star Monica Puig from Puerto Rico eliminated fifth-seeded Sara Errani of Italy 6-3, 6-2.  The Puerto Rican teenager dominated all match against Errani. Puig scored four aces, had 38 winners to Errani’s thirteen and had her competitor running wild throughout the match. Monica Puig  has not yet won a single event on the WTA Tour. This was Puig’s first Wimbledon, and thus far she’s made the most of it.

Finally, last surprise came from Lleyton Hewitt. He  added another shock result to the first Wimbledon day’s list when the Australian defeated 11th-seed Stanislas Wawrinka in a straight-sets.

I hope we will watch a lot of interesting and intriguing tennis matches in the next two weeks at Wimbledon.
