Compete and improve during the tournament

Marcin Bieniek

All players take part in the competitions because they want to win. They want to advance to the next round, they want to get points and they want to climb the rank. Of course, the satisfaction of the rivalry as well as the ability to play against various opponents are also important factors but the priority for any competitor is to focus on winning and beating the next opponent. From the score perspective, that is a great mindset but going to the tournament just to play and win is the waste of many opportunities to improve.

Depends on the level, players can play tournaments of different grades. They can attend local tournaments, regional events, national championships, or international competitions. All these tournaments differ according to the organization, format, and the benefits for participants but the overall goal is always the same: to allow players to fight and decide who is the most effective tennis player.

Going to the tournament allows for playing in a stressful environment which is completely different than practicing at home’s club so players can test their skills and know what they have to improve to be even more successful. On the other hand, being on the tournament creates many opportunities to improve and get own game to a much higher level. With some conscious actions, players can use the time before and after the match to improve various areas of athletic development and these activities can be crucial in their long-term careers.

If you want to get from the tournament more than just a few points, make sure you plan how you want to improve in any country you compete:

Train with unknown partners

Going to the tournament with other players from your club/country is a comfortable way to plan many things but it definitely limits your chances to improve as a tennis player and as a human being. If you look for other hitting partners and ask unknown players for a good training session, you will get out of your comfort zone so you will improve your confidence. Additionally, you will have a chance to practice with players of different styles and tactical patterns so these factors will definitely have a positive impact on your development.

Analyze the opponents’ game and skills

If you get to the final and win the tournament – that is great. It is the confirmation that you have really good skills. On the other hand, if you lose in the second round, you can still use the rest days of the tournament to obtain great results in future tournaments. Make sure you watch other matches and learn how winners win the points. You can see their strengths in technical, tactical, physical, and mental preparation and decide which areas you have to improve to be able to play as effectively as they do.

Talk to other people

A lot of players look for improvements only on the court but they forget that improvement is available almost everywhere. During the tournament, there are numerous players and coaches who have their own skills, experiences, and possibilities so making new contacts and talking to different people can result in having a doubles partner in the future or discovering new methods to improve forehand cross-court.

Playing tournament is a great experience for any tennis player. The ability to travel, spend time in a new environment and fight to the last point are all factors that always make competition really interesting. However, when the match is over, the player can still become better so knowing and using opportunities to improve should be priorities for all participants at all levels of performance.
