Discussing Roland Garros – The French Open 2013
Let’s talk about women’s part of the tournament. There are a lot of pleasant surprises from American women tennis players. They have played much better at Roland Garros this year than I expected. Four Americans players in the fourth round. Who will reach quarterfinals from them?
Serena Williams will play Roberta Vinci tomorrow. Serena must win. No doubts.
The biggest surprise came from Jamie Hampton’s play. She played great and she defeated Petra Kvitova today. Amazing result to Hampton. She will play Jelena Jankovic on June, 3. I wish her to win.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands is another big surprise. She has showed a really strong mentality and played very good during the previous matches. She will meet Maria Kirilenko in the next round. Is Mattek-Sand able to win? I don’t know. Maria Kirilenko is in a really good shape in Paris.
Sloane Stephens will meet Maria Sharapova in next match. Does she have a chance to win? What is your advice for Stephens?
I asked a tennis coach about his forecast for the next women’s matches. His answer was short:
“Basically I think any woman can beat any other woman, especially on clay where fitness and mental toughness count for more than talent, except for Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, and Victoria Azarenka, all of whom are at least one level above everyone else. Petra Kvitova’s lefty serve doesn’t help much on clay. Jelena Jankovic has a good game for clay, since she likes to play defense.”
