Five powerful ways to regain that lost confidence

Allistair McCaw

Every athlete experiences dips in confidence from time to time. Having confidence is the key to achieving many great things in life. With it, you feel like you can take on the world. However without it, you feel lost, powerless and doubtful. Maybe you lost it somewhere along the way, a few lost matches, some poor results or even something that happened in your personal life.

So here are 5 powerful ways to get that confidence and swag back quickly.

1. Focus on the positives

Stop looking for what’s wrong and see whats right. Look for the best in things and people and if you do something well, then compliment yourself on it. Don’t dwell on past mistakes or failures. Make it a habit.

2. Self talk

Yes, that voice in your head, the one that wakes up with you in the morning, stays with you all day and goes to sleep with you, yep that one! The way you talk to yourself is probably the most crucial element in how you feel about life and in gaining confidence.

3. Take a history lesson

Go back in time to something special you achieved, something that you really had to work hard for.

When i’m working with an athlete who might have lost some confidence, I like to show them video footage of a big match or event they won. This brings back good memories and feelings of positive energy.

I tell them to look at it at least 3 times a day for a week (Coaches – try this with your athletes). I also tell them to keep a photo next to their bed, reminding them of that special moment (trophy in hands etc..).

That person will see that they’ve done if before and they can certainly do it again – In fact, even better!

4. Surround yourself with the right people

They say that “people matter, things don’t!” It’s important that you surround yourself with people that build you up. Find people that tell you the truth, even if it can sting at times.
People that want the very best for you. Get rid of negative influences.

5. Believe in yourself

The key to successful people is that they believe in themselves. You are awesome and you have what it takes. Believe it! Tell yourself this as many times in a day as you can.

Don’t let one minor mishap or bad thing ruin a whole day. Also, remember to laugh at yourself from time to time, and not to take yourself to seriously!

Most of all, have patience. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Work on these 5 steps and you’ll get back to winning ways! Confidence is a state of mind – it’s your call.
