Good Communication Skills Are Key to Success

The key to success is in your communication skills. Here’s 7 tips from Allistair McCaw.
World class communication yields world class results. Just like a successful marriage, great athlete-coach relationships communicate well and often.
Here’s 7 tips to help you communicate better:
1. Keep your explanations brief and understood. Nobody likes a lecture, so keep it short and simple.
2. Don’t stand afar and scream across the field/track/court. This is where messages are unheard or mis-understood. Bring your athletes closer in.
3. Keep your team in the loop at all times – group e-mails, changes to the program, travel changes, meetings etc..
4. Effective communication is about being approachable. Are you approachable? Do people feel at ease talking and sharing with you?
5. Set up a weekly meeting with your team or athletes to discuss matters, new events, happenings, reminder of team standards etc..
6. When you talk, talk in a way that people want to listen to you.
7. From the outset, inform your athletes, fellow coaches, parents, etc.. that when you send an e-mail out, all you ask for is that a simple reply or acknowledgement is replied, something as simple as a “Thanks”, or “OK, got it”.
I always feel that if someone has taken the time to write an e-mail, then it’s just a respectful thing to simply give a reply (and preferably that same day).
Poor communication or lack of it in your organization or team, can be your ticket to failure. When you improve this area, great things start to happen!
