How Many Hours Should Junior Tennis Players Train?
We have another question from a tennis parent
Dear, have just red your article how many hours should junior tennis players train. We have similar, almost the same experience. My kid was born in 2005, and until this season she has 4 x 2 hours individual and 2 x 2 hours in group and 2 x 1 conditioning weekly. We keep that the same. She is 14 year-old. Now our coaches said she needs to have 20 hours of tennis per week (???). She won tournaments and she had no injuries. I am so afraid of that “hours”. Please is there any advice?
I asked our tennis expert David Mullins to answer the question. Here is his response
This is a very difficult question to answer. It depends on a number of factors, but you probably need to start by asking what your daughter would like? Does she want to put in more hours on the tennis court, and if so why? She needs to decide if this is important to her. Some of the other factors you need to consider would be the following:
- The intensity and focus of the practices – some hours are more beneficial than others.
- The extra time and cost associated with doing more hours.
- How will her body hold up to the extra hours and what protocols will she implement to stay injury free, which also take up more time.
- What else in her life will she be giving up to do more hours, and is it worth it.
- What are her goals for her tennis?
The coaches need to be able to explain to her clearly as to how more hours on the court will help her accomplish her goals.
