Maria Sharapova Hired Jimmy Connors, Eight-Time Grand Slam Champion, as Her New Tennis Coach

Two days ago Sharapova said about ending her successful three-year partnership with Thomas Hogstedt. Today she announced that eight-time Grand Slam champion Jimmy Connors will be Hogstedt’s successor:

“I am happy to announce that Jimmy Connors will be my new coach. I have known Jimmy for many years and we briefly worked together in 2008 just before the Australian Open. I am really excited about our new partnership and looking forward to the upcoming tournaments.”

Why did Sharapova do it? Is Connors able to strengthen her play and if “yes”, in which way?   I asked a tennis coach about Sharapova’s decision. He said:

“I thought Hogstedt did a good job. Connors strengths, hard flat ground strokes and intense competitiveness, would seem to match Sharapova’s.”

What do you think? Let’s discuss that.
