Money and Tennis. How Much Do You Need to Develop a Strong Tennis Player

Let’s talk about money and tennis. How much do you need to develop a strong junior tennis player? Suppose that you have a 7-year-old kid and you have decided to make him a good tennis player. Maybe you are interested in how much money you will spend for tennis in the upcoming ten years.

You will probably be surprised but the amounts can be different at times. Let’s consider a kid, named John, for example. From 7 to 9 years old, he can play tennis two-three times a week in a group of four players and he can have probably one private lesson a week. For you, it costs approximately $400-700 a month. It depends on your region and the quality of the coach.

From 10 to 12 years old, John will play four-five times a week in a group and have one-two private lessons. It will cost you $600-1000 a month plus money for local tournaments, say $50-100. A total of about $700-1100 a month.

If John’s results are improving at 13 years of age, he probably needs one-two additional fitness workouts. So, your tennis budget is going to be at least $900 a month.

At 15 years old, John begins to play tournaments not only in his general area, but also nationals as well. It will definitely increase your budget by $300-500 a month. Of course, we remember direct and indirect expenses like all the tennis stuff, stringing, gas, sports medical insurance, recovering, etc. In instances such as this, it might be worthwhile to take a moment to compare credit cards—or at least rewards programs—to find one that can offer you relevant rewards or better, cash back. The goal here is to get rewarded for your increased spending.

If we assume that you can keep the same budget until John goes to a college on an athletic scholarship, your total amount of spent money in 10 years on tennis will be about $100K-150K. I intentionally calculated the average amount, without expensive tennis academies that could cost you $40K-100K a year.

If John is able to get a scholarship from a good private university with cost of education for four years of about $160-240k, your investment in tennis  will be profitable. Plus John and his family will have a good time and a good sport to enjoy.

In this post I considered an average talented tennis player who is not going to play pro level tennis. Calculations for a kid with desire and physical, natural ability to play tennis on tour may be significantly different in terms of increasing as well as decreasing of total expenses.

Let’s share your experiences and stories about how much money you spend on tennis for a junior tennis player.
