First Results and First Surprises at Roland Garros – The 2013 French Open
There were no surprises on men’s side. All of the seed tennis players won their matches.
But on women’s side we have two big surprises. In the most interesting and intriguing match of the day, Urszula Radwanska won Venus Williams. Urszula definitely had a good plan for the match. In the post match interview she said “Yeah, of course, I was talking with Aga (Agnieszka Radwanska) about Venus. I was well-prepared for this match, and I knew she was a great fighter, so I should be focused the whole match.”
The another surprise was a victory of 19 years old tennis player Monica Puig over 11th seed and former Roland Garros semifinalist Nadia Petrova.
I asked a tennis coach to share his thoughts regarding the first day at Rolland Garros.
Venus Williams lost in three sets to Urszula Radwanska. Do you think it is time for Venus to retire?
I watched Venus. She is slow. While I can’t tell her what to do, I want to remember her for her dominating greatness.
What are your predictions about winners?
Any winners but Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams would be a surprise, and I don’t expect any surprises. Of course, you have to play the match, but they both look as good as ever which is frightening for everybody else. I’d love to see David Ferrer go a long way.
Well, I guess the main surprise on the men’s side came on the second day of the first round (Monday, May 27) with the elimination of #5 seed Tomaz Berdych by Gael Monfils, who used to be #7 but is currently #81 and was #119 as recently as May 5, 2013 before his win in the Bordeaux Challenger and his final in Nice. As for Rafa, he got a little scare against Daniel Brands. Also, remember that there are many players who yet have to play their first round. So, in theory at least, we could still have some 1st round surprises on Wednesday…
Good point Xavier. Let’s see what will happen tomorrow.
