What Do You Think about on Tennis Court Coaching by WTA?
There is an opinion of Robert Lansdorp about on tennis court coaching by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
First of all, I think that it makes the women look like the WEAKER sex. The Men can do it on their own, they don’t need a ”coach” to help them out. Secondly it does not help and most of us don’t speak Russian or any of those beautiful languages, so we don’t know what is going on anyway. I have never seen a player change after the coach came on the court. I know from experience that you can’t really change their mind.
This player asked me to be her coach for the match. She had worked with me for several years. I said “fine”. The match started and she was doing great. Everything was working, taking the ball early and hardly any errors and hitting the ball hard. She wins the first set and she calls me on the court. I go to myself what the hell for, this is stupid, she is playing great. I go on the court and tell her “you are doing great, playing beautifully, taking the ball early. Great keep playing like this, just toss your ball a little higher on your serve” I go sit down and she plays one more great game and then goes south. Can’t hit a ball and loses the second set. I get called on the court and I say ”What the hell happened, play like you played the first set. Now go out there and fight like hell, damn it.” I sit down, she plays one more bad game, and starts playing great and wins the 3rd set easy.
Was I this great coach, I don’t think so. Wondered why Jimmy Connors did not get on the court?? Probably would not have helped. Anyway, WTA don’t make the women look weaker than the men please. Wonder why Serena Williams does it by herself?? Because she is one tough gal, and can do it on her own. Maria Sharapova, you always played better, when you played by instinct in stead of people telling how to play all the time. Go back to being disciplined and independent when you play your matches, and don’t have anybody come on your court in the future.

I agree with Robert. Tennis is an individual, not a team sport. I wish the WTA would abolish the on-court coaching rule. Don’t wait until an irate father/coach gets on court and slaps his daughter in front of the world!
is a partial view, can also provide support when things go wrong, everything is in the preparation of the coach
Hi Oscar, boxing is an individual sport and coaching is allowed.
It might be good to recommend to the players the same” gym”, which was Serena when she was a girl, look what was and what is to become!! Because nobody talks about this?
I also agree it doesn’t help. I have been to many college matches for women’s tennis. The more you coach the worst it gets. You should have a game plan before you enter the court. Have confidence in yourself and apply your game plan to your opponents weakness.
All other sports have coaches coaching during the competition. Basketball is a great example of this and nobody tells them they are weak. I think that in the same way the tennis players are put to the test on the tennis court, also their coaches should be put to the test. There are many coaches out there whose responsibility is to coach tennis players but they have it easy by not being allowed to coach their players. It would be very interesting to see how many tennis coaches can really demonstrate they deserve their job by being allowed to coach. They have it too easy and then it takes years until the tennis players find out it was not to their best interest to have had this coach for so long. By being allowed to receive coaching, they can know earlier they have the right person in their team. And remember, the tennis coaches can see things better than the players who cannot see by being in the tennis match. The coaches can see from outside the box and truly earn their money if they really know what they are doing. And again, all sports have coaching, why tennis should not? Every new addition to game has been taken very well by the tennis fans: tie break, challenge, no adds in doubles. Coaching would be a great addition to the game and give an opportunity to, those who are not so gifted, to figure out things on their own. Also, I as a fan of the game I am, I love to hear the information the coaches give to their players during the tennis match. Let’s not forget that even it is not allowed to coach, men’s tennis is full of coaching during the tennis matches and we all know it. Illegal coaching happens everyday on every tennis match. So, let’s just make it legal. To finish, and with all the respect to coaches out of my generation, I think the resistant to coaching is a generation gap. Everything changes and we need to adjust to the changes or we are to disappear. If you do not believe, ask Charles Darwin.
Tennis isn’t like other sports, no shot is just the same , you need to have your own voice in your head and the concentration you need is immense . Perhaps some people could use advise while playing, but it’s the work you do before the match with the coach that counts, you just have to work it out and get it together in the game you’re in.
