May Be It Is Time to Let Go — 2 Comments

  1. Hi Dave, really nice article! As an umpire for many years, I saw “The Tennis Parent” up close and they ranged from those nice people who wanted to be helpful to their child to those agressive control-seeking parents who were trying to live out their (failed) careers through their children. I never saw the children of the latter advance very far in the Tennis game.
It must be recognised, however, that sometimes the objectives of college players and their coaches are at odds. The coach wants to win the title of his(or her) conference, and the players can be used a “cannon fodder” while the student player sees their time in college as a pathway to the ITF tours and sometimes the two objectives are inimical. Does this make sense?

    • Hi Rory,
Thanks for the response. Yes, it completely makes sense, and there is no doubt that coaches can be guilty of putting their own goals ahead of their players at times. The main point of the article is to encourage parents to let their children fight their own battles once they get to college. If they have an overzealous coach that is only focused on making themselves look good, then it is up to the player to navigate that relationship and learn what lessons they can from it, good and bad. They may have to work with, or work for people like this who constantly put their own needs first when they graduate college. If the parent robs them of this opportunity during their college years then they will be less resilient when faced with similar issues later in life. Thanks again Rory.
