Who Will Win The Roland Garros 2014?

The Roland Garros 2014 started in Paris and we continue to discuss the tournament with a tennis coach. First, consider chances of American men tennis players. We have only one player in top 50 – John Isner, and a few hope that he can make a history in Paris. I still expect that Jack Sock and Steve Johnson are able to strengthen their game and reach top 50. We’ll see this week, if they can do that. By the way, they have a chance to play each other in the second round; Sock already is waiting his competitor (in the first match Almagro retired). If Johnson wins French player Lokoli, he will play Jack Sock.

Let’s talk about possible winners at the Roland Garros. What do you think about men’s part of the tournament?

I have watched a little bit. We are in a golden age for men’s tennis with three great players Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer and one near great Andy Murray. They share intelligence, athleticism and work ethic. Their styles have no similarity at all, which makes me wonder about the USTA concept of one size fits all and coaching by committee. Maybe we can hire Uncle Toni.

Now, look at women’s side. In top 20, we see only two relatively young tennis players – Genie Bouchard and Sloane Stephens. It is interesting fact, that both players were trained by Nick Saviano, and actually Saviano is an active coach of Bouchard. What do you think about their perspective, will they become the next tennis stars?

I think Sloane Stephens was developed by Roger Smith. After Serena, she is the best athlete on the tour, but I question her thought processes and her work ethic. The opposite is the case for Genie Bouchard. One of them could be a world number one as Serena and her two ladies-in-waiting age, but what a drop off.

Who will win the French Open 2014, what is your forecast?

Serena’s B game would place her at the top. Right now, she seems to be on her A game. I do not know how she keeps that drive. Clearly, she survived a horrendous injury. It is going to be a great men’s final. Women will be a toss-up if Serena gets hurt.
