Who Will Win the Wimbledon 2014?

Yesterday, we briefly discussed Wimbledon tennis tournament with a tennis coach.

American players have confirmed one more time, that American tennis in a deep crisis despite the fact that USTA is the richest tennis federation in the world and the country has perfect weather conditions and an infrastructure for that sport.

Sloane Stephens unexpectedly lost in the first round at Wimbledon 2014, and then we got one more result that was not a pleasant surprise. The living legend and number one in the world Serena Williams lost to Alize Cornet after easily winning the first set 6-1. As a result, on today we have only one survived American tennis player on the women’s side Madison Keys.

So, return to Serena Williams’ play. Did you watch the match? What happened?

I saw Serena’s match. She was horrible. The aura is gone and I don’t foresee it returning. On top of that, she never learned to volley, and that deficit finally cost her, as it did against Justin Henin some years ago in the French Open. Her movement was lacking. Serena’s B game should still beat anyone else. Not her F game.

Let’s consider who can win Wimbledon this year. Victoria Azarenka is out, so Maria Sharapova is one of the main contender for winning. In addition, we have Simona Halep, Genie Bouchard and Agnieszka Radwanska. I have watched Bouchard’s play; her first serve and forehand look very strong, and she is trained by the great coach Nick Saviano. It is interesting if she will be able to repeat or overcome her excellent results at Grand Slam tournaments this year. I hope, she will. Radwanska also demonstrates very confident play; she easily won all three matches in two sets. You know that I like Radwanska because she is the smartest player on the pro tennis tour. I expect that Agnieszka will reach semifinals, at least.

What do you think about possible winners?

No one on the women’s side looks great. Theoretically, the tournament belongs to Maria Sharapova, but I would not write off Genie Bouchard or Simona Halep.

Now go to the men’s side. We have the same sad situation with American men’s tennis players. Only John Isner still plays in London. The next question is who will win Wimbledon this year. Roger Federer looks very confident. Rafael Nadal plays very aggressively, as always. But Novak Djokovic has a problem with a shoulder. By the way, Andy Murray said to media that he is going to win Wimbledon again.

Do you think Roger Federer has chances in London, or Nadal and Murray have more chances for this Grand Slam?

Matures I knows how to play on grass. Andy Murray doesn’t, but he is the defending champion. Rafael Nadal looks better than everybody else. I’ll pick Roger Federer.
